JOB DESCRIPTION

Every new Mansfield Autism Practitioner will receive a minimum of six weeks in-service training at
Mansfield before starting to visit children, and periodic visits to Mansfield will be required for staff
meetings, discussion of programmes, assessment of progress, in-service, etc.
Once visiting begins, the Mansfield Autism Practitioner visits families with a child with autism in the
assigned area. MAP’s are provided with a car from Mansfield Autism Statewide Services. Also,
board and accommodation in the family home, for periods varying from one to five days, according
to the age and needs of the child. The itinerary and duration of visits are planned in conjunction
with the Mansfield Austim Practitioner Team Leader.

Planning and implementing programs in any area of the child's development, including:
• Toileting
• Eating
• Social skills
• Self-help skills
• Communication
• Gross and fine motor skills
• Behaviour management
• Academic skills, etc.
Many hours will be spent in discussions with parents, and liaison with schools and other agencies
working with the child, are often necessary. However, our service is primarily a "hands-on" service
to families, not an advisory service to schools.
Each term we hold Camps (6day duration) for children with autism and their families. MAP’s are
involved in running these, planning programs and supervising voluntary helpers.
The Mansfield Autism Practitioners identify children on their caseload who would benefit from a
placement at the Centre. It is the MAP’s role to discuss this option with the parents and, if relevant,
place a referral into the MAP Team Leader.
When a child from their caseload attends the School, the MAP works in close partnership with the
Class Teacher, Residential Care Workers, Parents and Significant Others, to develop educational and
management plans.
